Hey, March babies. Congratulations, your official birthstone is the beautiful aquamarine. Did you know that one of the largest and most famous aquamarines of all time — a 1,298-carat wonder — was gifted to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt by Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas nearly 80 years ago? It now resides in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, N.Y.
FDR had just won his second presidential election in November of 1936, when he and the First Lady decided to embark on a month-long “Good Neighbor” cruise to South America. When the cruiser USS Indianapolis landed in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian president and his wife presented Eleanor Roosevelt with the remarkable stone from Vargas’ own collection.

Archaeologists have discovered a 5,000-year-old silver mine that radically rewrites the history of how the precious metal was unearthed in ancient Greece. Although they were believed to be slaves who had no option but to toil in stifling and dangerous conditions, ancient miners were far more sophisticated than historians ever imagined.
Archaeologists conducting a subterranean investigation of the Thorikos silver mine found a surprisingly complex system of galleries, shafts and chambers — about 5km of conduits in all.
The skill and physical abilities employed by the ancient miners to dig these channels, access the ore deposits from the bedrock and then to properly process them outside of the mine reflected a triumph of human ingenuity, reported New Historian.

For centuries, historians and jewelry lovers alike have been enchanted by the mystique of amethyst, the official birthstone of February. A member of the mineral quartz family, amethyst radiates a wide array of regal purple hues ranging from sparkling lilac to sultry deep violet. Amethyst is associated with spirituality, sobriety, security and wisdom. It is also the zodiac stone for the constellation of Pisces.
The alluring gemstone has been the focus of many intriguing myths and legends throughout history. The name “amethyst” is derived from Greek, meaning “not drunken.” According to Ancient Greek lore, the stone could ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and intoxication, and keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted.

Mariah Carey’s colossal 35-carat diamond engagement ring from Aussie billionaire James Packer sets a new standard for Hollywood bling.
Worth an estimated $7.5 million, the ring’s emerald-cut diamond center stone is more than twice the weight of the 17-carat emerald-cut pink diamond she received from former husband Nick Cannon in 2008. Packer popped the question to Carey in New York City this past Thursday.
The diamond, which is surrounded by tapered baguettes in a platinum setting, outweighs the most famous celebrity engagement rings of all time. These include the 30-carat diamond Elizabeth Taylor received from Michael Todd in 1957, the 24-carat canary yellow diamond Paris Hilton accepted from Paris Latsis in 2005.

Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley unveiled her flawless 5-carat Edwardian-era engagement ring from actor Jason Statham on the red carpet of the Golden Globes last week.
The ring from designer Neil Lane’s archival collection features a round diamond secured by its original four-prong Edwardian setting — a piece that dates back to the early 20th century, according to People StyleWatch. The platinum band is adorned with pavé diamonds on each side, and has a delicate diamond gallery that encircles the center stone. People reported that the ring’s value is $350,000.
The 48-year-old Statham, a Brit who is famous for his tough-guy roles in films, such as The Transporter trilogy and The Fast and the Furious franchise, was truly excited when he found the right ring, according to Lane.
GARNET IS THE BIRTHSTONE FOR JANUARY. TALK TO US ABOUT CREATING A PIECE FOR YOU USING GARNETS IN THE DESIGN.
Once the pride of Manhattan, the “Subway Garnet” — a 9 pound 10 ounce reddish-brown crystal of the almandine variety — is currently relegated to a storage drawer on the fourth floor of the American Museum of Natural History.
In a recent article in The New York Times, George Harlow, the curator for the earth sciences department at the museum, explained why the Subway Garnet has been out of the public eye.
He said that only 2 percent of the vast collection is on view, so any visiting geologist who wants to see what may be the most famous example of January’s birthstone must make an appointment with the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The Museum’s mineral and gem collections total in excess of 100,000 specimens.
And what about the name? Legend states that the Subway Garnet was discovered by a city worker in 1885 near the corner of 35 Street and Madison Avenue.
